The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) on Thursday released its 2021 “notorious Markets” list.Tencent’s wechat e-commerce system and Alibaba Group Holding LTD’s AliExpress were added to the blacklist for the first time.USTR identified 42 online and 35 physical markets on its “notorious Markets” list, identifying them as having engaged in, or facilitated, a significant amount of trademark counterfeiting or piracy.Tencent’s WeChat e-commerce system and its China-oriented version of WeChat have become one of the largest platforms for counterfeit goods in China, according to USTR.Of particular concern is that its seamless connectivity across the entire wechat platform promotes the distribution and sale of counterfeit products. The USTR also noted a significant increase in counterfeit goods sold on AliExpress, alibaba’s aliExpress platform.Aliexpress offers a range of products that are blatantly advertised as fake, as well as those that are falsely advertised as genuine, according to reports by product intellectual property rights holders. In addition to wechat e-commerce and AliExpress, Taobao, Pinduoduo, Baidu Netdisk and Dunhuang continue to be included in the “notorious markets” list.
